Crossed Wires
The phone rings… and we answer…and we answer…
it’s a call with a question: Who is this?
This experience uses the work of Hitchcock and Coward to entice the spectator into a cinematic world of fantasy. A short filmic sequence plays out ending with an anonymous figure dialling a telephone. Subsequently a phone call is made to each of the spectators via a black landline telephone. As conversations unwind so will fantasies, fears and dreams… but whose? The experience continues with an invitation to voyeuristically follow one of three performers in the city at a chosen location, either as the secret admirer, the murderer or the obsessive stalker.
The artists’ previous work draws on their interest in meeting strangers. In this particular piece they attempt to preserve the relationship between two strangers. The artists never physically meet their audience and instead play with the idea of making their audience into voyeurs.
Physical Description:
An audience of 2 will enter an intimate installation space. A 3 minutes film is played and a phone rings. Each audience member will have the opportunity to answer a telephone call by one of three performers – who will not be visible to the audience. The phone call lasts approx. 5 minutes and ends with an invitation to follow that performer at an organised location in the city later in the day. The performance installation lasts approx. 10 minutes and is located in a blacked out space (size negotiable). The second part of the performance located in the city lasts approx. 5 minutes (but through development would last longer).
This performance was created for Escalator East to Edinburgh 2006 for Dr. Roberts Magic Bus.
